8 Ways to Prepare Your Outdoor Patio for Fall

    by Waverly Wilde

Easily transform your patio into a harvest-inspired haven.

    1. Replant the Planters

Once the bright and vibrant tones of summer start to wane and transition into burnt hues, swap out your daisies and lilies for chrysanthemums and goldenrods. Start by deciding what your core color scheme will be. Add accents of red and orange, and as Halloween approaches, introduce accents of deep crimson and purple-toned grasses. Get creative with your planters and mix and match different sizes. Placing planters on the front steps of your doorway or out in the yard where you lounge make for a captivating splash of color during fall.

    2. Light it Up

The calming twinkle of lights has no change in season--adding warmth and festivity helps to brighten your outdoor space year-round. If you prefer a clean and uniform finish, hang string lighting parallel to each other to perk up your gathering space. For a fun, carefree look, drape them over tree branches, outdoor umbrellas, or along your fence. The soft glow helps add a little sparkle on the chilliest fall nights.

    3. Bundle Up

If you plan to spend time out in the yard this autumn roasting marshmallows, playing touch football, and enjoying a warm cup of cider or cocoa, throw blankets are a must-have during the fall season. Keep a few on hand to quickly warm up on chilly fall evenings. Keep an outdoor storage box or woven basket to store knits, fleece, and throw blankets for quick and easy access. If it gets foggy and much too cold to enjoy the outdoors, bring the container inside for cuddling up during movie night.

    4. Wreaths and Garlands

A decorative piece that never goes out of style, wreaths and garlands are a great way to add a touch of nature to your patio space this fall. The colors are warm and inviting, and the designs create a welcoming outdoor space where guests can admire the nature-inspired decor. Oakleaf is a great piece to transition from Halloween through Thanksgiving to last the entire season. Draping a coordinating garland over the door frame adds a cohesive element to match the aesthetic of the rest of your space.

    5. Lanterns

If you’re sitting outdoors cozied up with a mug of hot apple cider reading your favorite book, adding a standing lantern to this scene is another way to create a picturesque fall setting outdoors. Lanterns can be incorporated into your decor in many different ways, whether standing alone or part of a lush centerpiece. Mix and match metal and wood frames in a variety of sizes to create a contrast of finishes. Place a small candle in each lantern and line them alongside your patio.

    6. Decorative Pillows

If you’re trying to keep your decorative costs at a minimum, outdoor pillows can help shift the mood at a low price point. Place pillows on dining chairs, rockers, or accent furniture to embrace the atmosphere of autumn. You can even drape one of your throw blankets over the chairs for a finishing touch. If you enjoy using decorative cushions all season long, consider opting for furniture covers designed to protect your fabrics from outdoors.

    7. Pumpkin Everything

During the fall, pumpkin season lasts the entire season. Pumpkins are a great addition to fall decor to spruce up your patio or entryway. Pumpkins can be placed on top of stacks of hay or near some stalks of corn to immerse in the fall tone. They can also be placed along the back stairs leading out to the patio or near other plantings to create a fall garden in your yard. Unfortunately, you cannot plant and grow pumpkin spice lattes in your yard.

    8. Warm-up by the Fire Pit

Acting as the pulse of your backyard during the fall months, a fire pit is a surefire way to transition your outdoor space between seasons. If you’re entertaining guests, place comfy chairs and pillows around the bonfire and layout skewers for roasting s’mores. If you use your pit regularly, invest in a log holder to house your freshly cut wood. A warm, crackling fire heats you right up and creates a joyful environment for enjoying treats, telling stories, and sharing laughs.
